Memories of Harry Secombe's visit
Hearing Harry Secombe's magnificent tenor voice on Radio Yesteryear reminded me of the day he visited Woy Woy in the late 1960s.
I worked at Woy Woy Post Office and at 10:30am I took a mail bag to Woy Woy railway station to be delivered to Gosford Post Office
I handed the mail to the railway guard and then turned to see Harry Secombe step off the train.
He was admiring the view of Woy Woy Bay and appeared a little lost.
This was, no doubt, a surprise visit to the Milligans.
I said: "Good day, Harry. I'm going back to the post office. I'll give Mrs Milligan a ring to pick you up."
Harry gave his usual beaming smile and said: "Right, young fella."
I rang the Milligans and they picked Harry up from the station.
Later on, some telegrams arrived for Harry and Spike, so I pedalled off to Orange Grove Rd to the Milligan house.
Flo Milligan met me at the front door and said: "Sneak around the back. They're out there and haven't stopped laughing since Harry got here."
I crept around the back yard and there was Spike and Harry doubled over with uncontrollable laughter.
These two Goons certainly lived up to their name and fame.
Only one missing was the great Peter Sellers.
I walked back to my bike leaving them with their reminiscences and their hearty laughter: Two of the funniest comedians of the 1960s.
