Oyster baskets collected for Clean Up Australia Day

It was "Clean up Oyster Basket Day" as the Clean4Shore team removed 92 oyster baskets from Riley's Bay close to Hardy's Bay on Clean up Australia Day.

Clean4shore visited this site two weeks ago and stacked 67 baskets with more found closer to the Rip Bridge and Hardy's Bay plus eight on "Mangrove Island" near our start point at Lions Park Woy Woy.

Overcast weather may have dampened the public's enthusiasm for this event with team member Damo bringing his extended family plus barge for the day's cleanup.

Only two members of the public arrived.

The big high tide allowed access in Rileys Bay with the team walking the entire foreshore and mangroves initially removing treated pine logs, outdoor furniture, marine ply, car tyres and marine cushions.

Small litter was at moderate levels, mainly soft plastics, bait bags and plastic bottles.

Then the oyster baskets arrived and it was a "shuttle system" to get them to the barges as the tide fell.

Most bags had "dead' large large oysters removed, making them easier to handle.

Closer to Hardy's Bay locals had completed a clean up on the previous day with two foam mattresses more treated pine and more oyster baskets topping the barge up.

The trip home had the team walk the western foreshore of Mangrove Island with six more baskets plus two bags of small litter collected.

The extent of the oyster baskets indicates many more will be collected during coming schools field trips.

The group took 600 kilos of rubbish to Woy Woy Tip.
