Healthy debate

It would appear from some of the recent correspondence in local papers that some people have forgotten that public, intelligent debate on a subject is the sign of a healthy democracy.

Some letters have even pinpointed the inadequacies of our supposedly democratic system.

The winning of votes today would seem to be dependent on how much money you have to spread around and put on show, in order to convince the community that it is all for their benefit.

The Chamber of Commerce exists, as it should, to specifically further the interests of its members; the business fraternity.

It is unfortunate however that today's political parties would seem to be beholden to such people, particularly developers, in order to gain power.

Groups such as Save Our Suburbs and the Greens cannot compete with this financial display because they concern themselves with wider community issues, without any personal economic gain.
