Council names laneway

Gosford Council has decided to name an unnamed laneway Coolabah Lane.

It is between Squirrel St and Billabong St and the new name was chosen to keep with the naming theme in that area.

Council was recently contacted by McMasters Rd resident Ms Zaniem Ibrahim-Mann who in the near future would be moving into her newly-constructed home accessed via the unnamed laneway.

Ms Ibrahim-Mann asked that the laneway be named.

A report from council officers stated that "council does not normally support this type of request where parcels of land front a named public roadway or have access from that public named roadway, however due to a subdivision the property does not front a named public road".

The unnamed laneway in question was created as part of the "Blackwall estate", and was the result of three subdivisions.

The report stated that the situation highlighted a number of issues including waste servicing, delivery of mail and future delivery and emergency responses

Waste services officers stated that the owner had been informed that the bins would need to be placed on the corner of the unnamed laneway and Squirrel St, stating that the contractor's vehicle was too wide for the laneway.

Australia Post officers stated that they would require the owner to place a mailbox in McMasters Rd or obtain a post office box as they did not deliver to unnamed laneways.

The council report stated that "Ms Ibrahim-Mann has a young family and having to walk from her home into Squirrel St and along McMasters Rd would be onerous".

The report also stated that "future deliveries and emergency services would be impeded in locating this property should the laneway remain unnamed".

The report stated that only one other property would be affected by naming the laneway.

"The property is currently addressed to Squirrel St and would be more correctly addressed if this naming proposal is supported."

In proposing a name for the laneway, the report stated that it would be appropriate to utilise the existing theme that incorporates the street names of Jumbuck, Billabong and Swagman.

The proposed naming of the street as Coolabah Lane will now be open for public comment for a period of 30 days.
