College AGM tonight

The annual meeting of the Parents and Citizens Associations of Brisbane Water Secondary College will be held tonight, Monday, March 5.

The meeting will start at 7pm at the middle school campus in Veron Rd, Umina.

"All parents are invited to join and attend our meetings," said outgoing president Mr Bruce Donaldson.

Parents who would like to know more are invited to contact the presidents through the school or attend the annual meeting.

"Parents are under no obligation to take on executive roles at this meeting.

"However, it is always pleasing to see new parents join the association and a contribution to the educational programs of the school and to hear reports from the principals about student achievements," said Mr Donaldson.

Mr Donaldson said a parents and citizens association was a school-based organization consisting of parents, teachers and interested citizens.

"The Education Act states that these associations are established for a number purposes."

These included promoting the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation.

They could assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school and in promoting education and welfare of the students at the school.

The Act encouraged parent and community participation in curriculum and other educational issues through the association.

An association could report on a school's needs and advise about maintenance of the school, alterations and additions to facilities.

It could elect parent representatives to a school council.
