Condren Trophy will be highlight
Woy Woy Rugby League Football Club's annual presentation night will be held at Woy Woy Leagues Club on Saturday, October 24.
Highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Merv and Muriel Condren Trophy.
According to club secretary Mr Peter Read, the trophy, now in its 35th year, remains the club's "top prize" for players.
"The trophy is named in honour of two of the Roosters finest workers Merv and Muriel Condren, the patriarch and matriarch of a Woy Woy dynasty which saw their sons Steven, Paul and Kevin don the red and white, along with their grandson Scott, who played first grade for the Roosters in the 1990s," Mr Read said.
"The trophy was first awarded in 1975 to premiership winning second-rower Geoff Wilmott, and in the ensuing years some of the greatest Woy Woy players of all time have received the accolade at the club's annual awards.
"The legendary Steve McKenzie was the winner in 1977, while other notables in the 1970s included other Roosters Team of the Century members Bruce Monie (1976) and Dennis Corrigan (1979).
"Other Team of the Century members to win the award has been John Beecher (1980) and the great Warwick Wright, who was also the first two-time winner in 1989 and 1990.
"In 1982, Don Duffy became the first Roosters junior to win the award, and went on in 1983 to play first grade in Parramatta's premiership win over Manly.
"Long-serving front-rower Dave Thoms was the next Roosters junior recipient, while it took another 16 years (2001) before another junior in current first grade captain coach Jade Mason won the first of his amazing four awards.
"Adrian Overton was the most recent junior to win the award (2007)."
Mr Read said other two-time winners to take out the Merv and Muriel Condren Trophy include Ian Butt (1995 and 1997) and Duncan Smith (2000 and 2002).
"In 2007, the award was shared between Mason and Adrian Overton, which was the first time the trophy had been jointly awarded since its inception," Mr Read said.
"In 2008, long serving Roosters fullback Glenn McLellan was a popular winner and will join other Roosters such as Mason, Trent Murphy, Jared Smith, Sean Stevenson and Shane Wilson as contenders for the Merv and Muriel Condren Trophy in 2009."
Tickets for the presentation night are now available from the leagues club reception for $30 each.
