Recovery centre opens at tip

A "full resource recovery centre" opened at Woy Woy tip on July 1.

Residents can take garden organics, building and construction materials, scrap metal and whitegoods, as well as domestic recyclables such as cardboard, glass bottles and aluminium cans to be recycled.

Domestic recyclables and scrap metal can be dropped off free of charge.

However, all other materials such as garden organics and inert waste will still attract a fee.

Resource recovery reduces the amount of landfill as most of these waste materials can be transferred and re-used, according to deputy mayor Cr Craig Doyle.

Full resource recovery is now available at both Woy Woy and Kincumber landfills.

Council approved the resource recovery in May.

"Resource recovery gives residents more options with their waste disposal," Deputy Mayor, Craig Doyle said.

"This means they are not adding to the landfill, leaving more space and extending the life of Gosford's waste sites."

"The resource recovery program was trialled before Council approved the strategy and it delivered some great results.

"We discovered that over a two week period around 70 per cent of the waste delivered to Kincumber landfill could be diverted away and re-used.

"Initial research indicates resource recovery could prolong the life of the Kincumber landfill until at least 2009, and it might extend Woy Woy for an extra nine years."
