Hazard reduction burn smoke visible from Peninsula

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service had a hazard reduction burn in Brisbane Water National Park behind Koolewong yesterday, Sunday, June 29.

Smoke from the burn was visible from the Peninsula.

The 20-hectare burn, which took place between Koolewong and Kariong, was designed to help protect Kariong Sacred Land Aboriginal Place and surrounding aboriginal sites, as well as protecting nearby properties.

A number of tracks in the area were closed during the burn, which was consulted in conjunction with Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council and other aboriginal members of the community

Mopping up operations are expected to continue during the week with the burn area remaining closed to the public until a full safety assessment is complete.

Fire truck taken to Alexandria for training

Crews from the Umina 340 fire station have taken their new fire truck for training at Alexandria.

The "compressed aerial pumper" combines a 24.5-meter extendable ladder with an air foam system and water tank, enabling firefighters to tackle fires and conduct rescues at various heights.
