Christian youth group joins Clean4Shore field trip

Storm and gutter debris were removed from Woy Woy and Paddy's Channels, from Pelican and Riley's Islands and from the Henderson Rd mangroves in January by a Peninsula Christian youth group

The group joined their first Clean4shore field trip and was introduced to low tidal mud, gutter rubbish and oyster baskets on.

"The main aim was to assess the storm damage with a falling tide reducing time on the tidal mangroves," said co-ordinator Mr Graham "Jono" Johnston.

"Riley's Island mangroves, close to St Hubert's Island, had gutter rubbish including food wrappings, soft plastic and plastic bottles with six oyster baskets carried to the barge.

"Only 200 metres was cleaned with the balance needing higher tidal water.

"Henderson Rd also had oyster product, gutter rubbish and a large pieces of hard plastic from the wall of the Woy Woy baths.

"Only 50 metres was cleaned.

"Paddy's Channel mangroves had oyster baskets, treated pine, drums and buckets with the section closer to Saratoga Island perhaps having much more rubbish and needing a higher tide.

"The Woy Woy Channel on Pelican Island had a pile of beer cans from poor camping practices, much more gutter rubbish, large poly pipe and oyster baskets removed with only half of the Channel covered by the team."

Mr Johnston said it was "a big mornings effort with one girl finding a $20 note".

He said Clean4shore are keen for more youth groups to joing its trips, especially during the school holidays.

The trip resulted in 400 kilograms of rubbish off-loaded at Woy Woy Tip.

Woy Woy homes hit by blackout

A total of 1093 households in Woy Woy were estimated to be affected by a power blackout at about 5:30pm on Tuesday, January 28.

The blackout was the result of the widespread storms across the Central Coast.

Power was restored by about 6:30pm.
