Tunnel would cost $15M

Peter Turnbull's claim (Peninsula News, December 9) that placing Dane Dr in a tunnel "has already been costed at $200 million" must have been sourced from Alice in Wonderland.

Road tunnelling in the kind of terrain found on the Gosford waterfront costs about $1500 per metre.

So a 100-metre tunnel would work out at about $15 million or a 200-metre tunnel at $30 million.

In terms of the overall cost of the redevelopment project, and particularly in terms of social benefit, this is peanuts.
